Sabah
Explore the history of North Borneo, its communities and the development of present-day Sabah.
Stories is a digital public-history website and blog devoted to Borneo’s past. It gathers more than 500 historical narratives that move beyond mainstream, official and state-centred accounts. Its focus is on personalities, localities and communities: individuals whose lives reveal larger currents; marginalised localities and communities; and formal or informal committees that shaped decisions, memories and identities. Many entries are provocative, some controversial. This is intentional, not sensational. The aim is to interrogate silences, unsettle comfortable assumptions and encourage evidence-based debate about Sabah’s complex history.
Each story is an accessible essay combining narrative with documentation. Sources include colonial records, newspapers such as the British North Borneo Herald, annual reports, oral histories, private papers, photographs, maps and ephemera. Where evidence is fragmentary, contradictory or politically charged, the blog acknowledges uncertainty rather than imposing false certainty. Interpretations are authorial and open to challenge. Readers should distinguish documented fact, informed inference and speculative reconstruction. Corrections, counter-evidence and community responses are welcomed.
The blog is not a closed academic monograph. It is a living archive, updated as new sources emerge and public memory shifts. Controversial subjects are handled with contextual care, ethical awareness and respect for living communities. The goal is not to shame or glorify, but to understand how power, personality, locality and community have shaped Sabah over time.
Stories is intended for researchers, students, teachers, journalists, local communities and general readers. It complements formal archives and academic works by making hidden, difficult and forgotten histories more visible. Used critically, it can stimulate further research, classroom discussion and public conversation. Ultimately, Stories invites readers to question who writes history, whose voices are heard, and why some pasts remain contested. These explanatory notes are subject to revision as the project grows and are offered in a spirit of critical inquiry.
