About
Borneo History
Borneo History is a state-level non-governmental organisation dedicated to preserving and advancing knowledge of Sabah and Borneo's history.
Historical Research
and Preservation
Borneo History was established to support historical research and the preservation of materials connected to Sabah's past.
Pertubuhan Sejarah Borneo Sabah (Borneo History) is a state-level non-governmental organisation registered under Malaysia's Societies Act. We search for, collect, repatriate and digitise historically valuable documents held within and beyond the country, preserving them as material for reference and research.
Our work shares discoveries about Sabah and its relationships with Brunei, Sarawak, Kalimantan and the wider Nusantara, or Malay Archipelago. We connect communities with their regional heritage and help safeguard that knowledge for present and future generations.
We work to make historical knowledge accessible to researchers, educators and the wider public.
Our Areas of Work
Historical Research
Investigating Borneo's past through documentary research and the examination of historical sources.
Regional History
While Sabah remains our principal focus, we examine its historical relationships with Brunei, Sarawak, Kalimantan and the wider Nusantara region.
Community History
Documenting local experiences and histories that may receive limited attention in broader historical accounts.
“Dedicate your life to truth.”
My interest in history began in the 1970s, as little more than a curiosity about the stories behind the places I knew. I did not know it then, but I was already in the slow process of finding my true purpose in life. It did not arrive as a single moment of clarity. It arrived the way most real things do, through years of reading, collecting, and asking questions that most people had stopped asking.
Apart from my main duties as a local Commercial Bank Manager, I have dedicated myself to preserving and sharing the unique stories of Borneo's history in general, and Sabah's history in particular. As an independent researcher and historian, I have contributed more than 400 history-related articles, presentations at various events, and several works focused on the history of our region. Besides writing, I collect Borneo-related artefacts, coins, manuscripts, and vintage items that add further layers to our collective memory. None of it felt, at the time, like the beginning of something. Looking back, I can see that it was.
In 2014, that purpose took a more permanent shape. I founded Borneo History and established a historical research team known as Kumpulan Penjejak Sejarah Borneo (the Borneo History Tracker Group), to encourage deeper interest in Borneo's history, particularly among the younger generation and history enthusiasts. What had once been a private pursuit needed to become something others could take part in. My hope was, and remains, to make our history accessible and relevant, and to create a space where diverse narratives can come together to enrich our understanding of who we are. This journey is both personal and collective, and I hope it continues to draw others in to actively join the work of preserving and celebrating our shared history.
Borneo's history offers valuable cultural insight, a strong sense of identity, and important lessons for the future. The effort to uncover and understand this history strengthens our footing in a rapidly changing world, and helps us reconnect with our roots. This historical perspective can also guide policy, education, and cultural programmes, strengthening our communities and enriching the wider discourse on identity, heritage, and resilience.
The case for a dedicated centre to bring Borneo's historical research together cannot be overstated. Such a centre would serve as a point of convergence, not only to preserve our local historical knowledge, but as a hub for innovative, history-based thought leadership. It could bring together researchers, historians, and communities who share an interest in Borneo's heritage, and, with a comprehensive approach, allow us to present our history not only at the local level but in an international context, bridging historical research across cultures and perspectives.
If I have found my purpose in Borneo's history, I did not find it alone. It was given to me, long before I understood what to do with it, by my father.
Thank you.

In Loving Memory of the Late Jeffri bin Mohd Asi

"Kehidupan adalah kesusahan yang harus diatasi. Rahsia yang harus di gali.
Tragedi yang harus dialami.
Kegembiraan yang harus dikongsikan.
Cinta yang harus dinikmati.
Tugas yang harus dilaksanakan.
Berikthiarlah dan rezeki itu satu kejutan.
Sentiasa memilih Kebaikan.
Bersyukur kepada apa yang ada."
An extraordinary man. The founding pillar behind everything this work has become. He was known as a keeper of history, a storyteller of heritage, a tracker of knowledge passed down through generations, and someone with a remarkable memory for old stories and genealogies. His knowledge and dedication transcended time and age, and his spirit lives on through his son, the Founder and President of the Sabah Borneo History (BH), Dr. Shari bin Jeffri.
Born in Sembulan Lama (Simbulan), Kota Kinabalu, on 13 April 1940, of mixed Bajau and Brunei descent, he served 37 years in the national security forces, taking part in significant operations including the Communist Remnants Clearance Operation, the Brunei Revolt Operation, and anti-piracy operations along Sabah's east coast. In recognition of his service, he was awarded seven service medals and is remembered as a disciplined, knowledgeable officer with a deep commitment to the people he served.
As a custodian of Simbulan's heritage, he preserved his family's knowledge and lineage through his own writing and research, later edited by his son in 2017 into a work titled Simbulan 1788: Kajian Awal, Catatan Lisan dan Tarsilah Keluarga Besar Simbulan (Simbulan 1788: A Preliminary Study, Oral Records and Genealogy of the Simbulan Extended Family), a body of knowledge preserved for future generations so they would never lose sight of their origins.
He also took great pleasure in attending historical events, meeting fellow enthusiasts, community leaders, and representatives of local institutions to share his life experience and knowledge. His contribution and dedication to history and heritage were remembered until the end of his life, before his passing in 2021.
Let us come together in reciting Surah Al-Fatihah in his memory.

Our Goals,
Vision and Mission
Our vision is to become the leading centre of reference and study for Sabah and Borneo history at the national and international levels.
Research, education, community outreach and digital preservation are central to that ambition. We aim to build a comprehensive Master Index of Borneo History for researchers, educators and the public, while making space for local voices too often absent from mainstream histories.
