1. Who We Are

Borneo History Archive is operated by the North Borneo History Research Centre (NBHRC). Our website is borneohistory.com. You can contact us at admin@borneohistory.com.

This Privacy Policy explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, and your rights in relation to it.

2. Data We Collect

We collect data only when you actively provide it:

• Account registration: name and email address when you sign up as a member
• Newsletter subscription: email address when you subscribe
• Payment: billing details processed by Stripe — we never store card numbers directly
• Contact: any information you include when emailing us

We also collect standard server logs (IP address, browser type, pages visited) for security and performance monitoring. These are not linked to individual accounts.

3. How We Use Your Data

• To create and manage your membership account
• To send transactional emails (signup confirmation, magic links, billing receipts)
• To send newsletters and editorial updates where you have opted in
• To process payments via Stripe
• To respond to enquiries
• To detect and prevent abuse or unauthorised access

We do not sell your data to third parties. We do not use your data for advertising.

4. Email and Newsletters

We use Mailgun to deliver email. Your email address is transmitted to Mailgun's servers for this purpose. You can unsubscribe from newsletters at any time using the link in any email or by updating your account preferences. Transactional emails (e.g. magic login links) cannot be opted out of while your account is active.

5. Payments

Paid memberships are processed via Stripe. When you pay, your card details are entered directly into Stripe's secure form and never pass through our servers. Stripe's privacy policy is available at stripe.com/privacy.

6. Data Retention

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will remove your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal or financial compliance purposes (e.g. billing records, which we keep for 7 years).

7. Your Rights

You have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Request correction of inaccurate data
• Request deletion of your data (subject to legal retention obligations)
• Withdraw consent for newsletter emails at any time
• Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority

8. Cookies

We use only essential cookies required for site functionality — session authentication and security tokens. We do not use tracking or advertising cookies.

9. Third-Party Services

• Mailgun — email delivery (privacy policy)
• Stripe — payment processing (privacy policy)
• Google Fonts — web fonts loaded from Google's CDN

10. Governing Law

This policy is governed by the laws of Malaysia. Any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Malaysia.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify members of material changes by email. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
